One of the highlights of the winter season is the Erfurt Germany’s Christmas Market, where visitors can enjoy delicious treats and unique handmade gifts. During the festive season, the Erfurt transforms the city into a magical holiday destination.
Quick Travel Facts:
Distance from Frankfurt am Main: Approximately 265 km (165 miles) east of Frankfurt, or about 2 and a half hours by ICE high-speed train.
We took the ICE train from Frankfurt to Erfurt for less than 25 euros per person one way, making it a far better option than driving in winter weather while avoiding high costs for gas and parking.
⚠️ Crucial Seat Reservation Tip: Always pay the extra fee (around €5.50) to reserve a specific seat on the ICE. During the busy Advent season, these trains pack out with holiday shoppers; without a reservation, you risk standing in the aisles for hours. When you book, check your Wagon (Car) Number carefully so you board the correct section of the train!
Accessibility: Well-connected via Germany’s efficient train network, with direct routes to cities like Frankfurt, Leipzig, Dresden, and beyond.

However, because Erfurt was located in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) or “East” Germany during the Cold War, it remains less familiar to many travelers from the United States.
For those who venture beyond the well-trodden paths of Bavaria or the Rhine Valley, Erfurt is a delightful discovery. This beautiful city, the capital of Thuringia, charms visitors with its rich history, stunning architecture, and genuine authenticity.
Unlike many other cities in Germany, Erfurt was fortunate to escape significant damage during the Second World War. What you see today is the real thing: cobblestone streets, romantic bridges, striking half-timbered houses, and awe-inspiring churches that look as if they’ve been plucked straight from the pages of a fairy tale.
A Hidden Gem Among Christmas Markets
Erfurt provides a more authentic experience than some of Europe’s bigger and better-known Christmas destinations. During a recent visit to Vienna, for instance, we heard a mix of languages from tourists at every market.
In contrast, Erfurt Germany’s Christmas markets had a distinct local feel, where we heard mostly German and were even treated to recommendations from friendly locals. Sharing a Ferris wheel ride with two proud Erfurters, we were able to practice our rusty German and learn about the “must-visit” sights in their charming city.
Travelers visiting during the Christmas season will find Erfurt especially magical. The festive markets bring twinkling lights, the aroma of Glühwein, and the joyful hum of holiday cheer. Whether strolling through the historic Cathedral Square, crossing the iconic Krämerbrücke (Merchant’s Bridge), or exploring cozy, hidden markets, Erfurt offers an unforgettable experience for every visitor.
Must-See Highlights During the Holidays:
Cathedral Square (Domplatz):
The centerpiece of Erfurt’s Christmas festivities. The Erfurter Dom (Cathedral of St. Mary) and St. Severi’s Church create a dramatic backdrop for the market. The glowing Christmas tree and festive lights amplify the Gothic splendor of these landmarks.
The cathedral with its high Gothic choir, Romanesque tower area and late Gothic west hall is the successor to the sacred building commissioned by Rome in 724. It was the main church of the diocese of Erfurt, founded by Bishop Boniface in 742.
Inside, the Gothic choir windows, the extensive choir stalls (14th century) and the Romanesque sculptures of an enthroned Madonna and a monumental candle bearer are particularly worth seeing. In the central tower is the world’s largest medieval free-swinging bell, the “Gloriosa”.
Krämerbrücke (Merchant’s Bridge):
The Krämerbrücke is a living piece of medieval history. Spanning the Gera River, it’s Europe’s longest inhabited bridge, lined with 32 half-timbered buildings hosting artisan shops and cafes. At Christmas, it transforms into a fairy-tale promenade with festive lights and decorations.
Strolling over the Krämerbrücke gives the feeling that you are simply strolling down a cobblestoned lane with no indication that you are actually on a bridge above a river.
Brücken Christmas Market:
A cozy, less touristy market located near the Krämerbrücke, perfect for soaking in a more local vibe while enjoying handcrafted gifts and seasonal treats.
Insider Food Find: The homemade Spätzle (German egg noodles) we enjoyed at the small market right on the Brücken Christmas Market was the absolute BEST we’ve ever had—truly crafted with love and dedication!
Hidden Courtyard Markets:

🏨 Where to Stay in Erfurt
For the absolute best Christmas market experience, we highly recommend booking a spot right in the heart of Erfurt’s historic Altstadt (Old Town).
When planning our trip, we typically choose to stay at Hyatt or IHG properties due to our status with these hotel chains; however, Erfurt lacked many recognizable American brands. As a result, we opted for a well-reviewed apartment we found on Booking.com, Apartment Pension Sternchen, ideally located between the Domplatz and the iconic Krämerbrücke.
Although we had to take a bus from the main train station to reach our accommodation, it was fairly quick and easy to find, and we were pleased to find it clean and well-equipped for our needs.
