The Historic Striezelmarkt – The Granddaddy of them All!
The Striezelmarkt dates back to 1434 when Friedrich II, the Elector of Saxony, established a one-day market in Altmarkt Square to help Dresden residents prepare for Christmas. Today, this historic market runs for several weeks, from late November until Christmas Eve, and is one of Europe’s most beloved festive events.
The Striezelmarkt is truly a feast for the senses. Twinkling lights, beautiful decorations – the tallest Christmas pyramid in the world (14M / 46 Ft), the aroma of seasonal treats, and the sound of joyful laughter and music create an unforgettable atmosphere.
The Striezelmarkt is home to our favorite Christmas market food of all time (we’ve visited many Christmas Markets over the years) the roasted Ox sandwich. This is meat sliced from an entire ox that is roasting on a spit – tender, juicy, delicious!
Dresden’s Other Christmas Markets
Dresden isn’t just about the Striezelmarkt. The city boasts several other wonderful Christmas markets, each with its own charm. During our short time in Dresden we weren’t able to visit all of them, but here is a list of the ones that we did visited:
Advent on the Neumarkt (New Market): Set beneath the breathtaking dome of the Frauenkirche, this enchanting Dresden Christmas market feels like stepping into a real-life holiday postcard. Twinkling lights glow against the baroque skyline while cozy wooden stalls offer handcrafted gifts, mulled wine, and festive treats. If you’re visiting the Dresden Christmas Markets, this romantic and picture‑perfect setting is one you absolutely can’t miss — it’s one of the most magical spots in the city during the holiday season.
Christmas Market at the Frauenkirche: The quaint Munzgasse is lined with festive stands from the back of the beautiful church, where the air is filled with the delightful aroma of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine, making it a perfect spot for holiday shopping and enjoying seasonal treats with friends and family.
Medieval Christmas Market at the Stallhof: A step back in time with medieval-inspired decorations, performances, and treats that transport you to a festive era of yore. This enchanting market is held in the former stalls of the Royal Palace of Saxony, providing a stunning backdrop to the holiday celebrations.
Here, artisans showcase their lovingly crafted goods—from intricate handmade ornaments to delicious seasonal delicacies—inviting you to stroll and explore, surrounded by the cheerful sounds of live music and joyful laughter.
With reservations, you and your friends can soak in a “medieval” hot tub while passersby look on, offering a unique experience that combines relaxation with the charming atmosphere of the market. As evening falls, the soft glow of lanterns illuminates the scene, creating a magical ambiance that perfectly captures the spirit of the season.
Winter Lights on Prager Straße: Situated near the Dresden Main Train Station, this enchanting market showcases a dazzling 15-meter-high Christmas tree adorned with sparkling lights that twinkle like stars in the night sky.
Each evening, visitors are captivated by the magical musical light shows that bring the festive spirit to life, transforming the area into a winter wonderland filled with joy. Families and children are treated to a multitude of fun activities, including a charming Santa Claus house where little ones can share their holiday wishes, and delightful carousel rides that add a touch of nostalgia to the experience.
Stalls lined with handmade crafts and tempting seasonal treats invite guests to linger, creating an atmosphere of warmth and excitement that embodies the essence of the holiday season.
Wandering through Dresden’s beautifully decorated streets feels like stepping into a Christmas postcard. The city is stunning year-round, but during the holiday season, it transforms into something truly magical.
We also attended a free Christmas organ concert at the Kreuzkirche, located right on the Striezelmarkt. The music added a layer of serenity and wonder to an already extraordinary experience.
What to Eat at the Dresden Christmas Markets: Must‑Try Festive Foods
It’s hard to feel grumpy at Dresden’s Christmas markets. The festive atmosphere, cheerful crowds, and mouthwatering smells work wonders to lift anyone’s spirits. From roasting chestnuts and sausages to steaming mugs of glühwein and lebkuchen, the culinary delights are irresistible. And let’s not forget the ox on the spit—unbelievable!
The food in Dresden is a highlight all on its own. In addition to the ox sandwich, we enjoyed:
- Prager Schinken (Prague ham): Smoky and savory.
- Langos: A Hungarian fried bread topped with cheese or garlic sauce.
- Schaumküsse (Cream Kisses): Sweet marshmallow-like treats covered in chocolate.
- Dresdner Christstollen: A traditional fruitcake that’s infinitely better than the American version!

Of course, we also enjoyed classic Christmas market fare like bratwurst, glühwein, and lebkuchen.
Dresden: A Dreamlike Holiday Destination
For the best view of the Striezelmarkt, we highly recommend climbing the 260 steps to the top of the Kreuzkirche tower. The 5-euro fee and effort are well worth it for the breathtaking panorama of Dresden illuminated at night.
As you ascend the tower, you’ll feel a mix of excitement and anticipation, looking forward to the stunning sight that awaits you at the top, where the glow of the market lights reflects off the historic buildings and creates a magical atmosphere. Once you reach the viewing platform, be prepared for crowds gathered to share in this spectacular experience, and consider arriving early to secure the best vantage points for your photographs.
Dress warmly—it can get quite windy up there, so layering your clothing is advisable to ensure a comfortable experience as you take in the distant silhouette of the Elbe River against the starry sky, a truly unforgettable moment that captures the essence of Dresden during the festive season.
