During our stay in the enchanting city of Colmar in the Alsace region of France, we couldn’t resist the allure of a day trip along the famous Route du Vin, or the Alsace wine route. This journey led us to three of the most picturesque villages you could ever imagine—Eguisheim, Hunawihr, and Ribeauvillé. Each village felt like a step into a fairytale, with charming streets, historic architecture, and the kind of beauty that seems almost too perfect to be real.
Driving through Alsace was a breeze for us as experienced drivers from abroad. If you’re planning to do the same, it’s wise to familiarize yourself with French road rules, have an international driver’s license on hand, and ensure your auto insurance covers you in France. And for American drivers, a quick brush-up on converting kilometers to miles can make navigation much simpler!
Why Does Alsace Feel So German?
As we meandered through Alsace, we couldn’t help but notice the strong Germanic influence in the region. This might leave you wondering why Alsace often feels more German than French.
The answer lies in its complex history. Positioned on the border between France and Germany, Alsace has been shaped by centuries of shifting control between these two nations. Originally part of the Holy Roman Empire, Alsace was predominantly German-speaking and culturally tied to Germany.
This influence is still evident today in the region’s architecture, food, traditions, and even the names of its villages, many of which bear Germanic origins. Despite becoming part of France in the mid-17th century and again after both World Wars, the Germanic roots of Alsace remain a vibrant part of its identity.
Morning: Eguisheim
Our day began in the enchanting village of Eguisheim, a hidden gem nestled in the Alsatian region of France. As the morning light illuminated the town’s medieval buildings, we were captivated by the village’s unique concentric layout, with its streets spiraling out from the central Château Saint-Léon, which stood proudly as a testament to the area’s rich history.
The colorful half-timbered houses, adorned with vibrant flowers spilling from window boxes, added to the charm, making each corner a picturesque sight worthy of capturing. Wandering through the narrow cobblestone streets, we stumbled upon quaint shops selling local crafts and delicacies, inviting us to pause and appreciate the artistry of the region.
Eguisheim is truly a photographer’s paradise, with picturesque views at every turn, providing countless opportunities to freeze these moments in time amidst a backdrop of stunning landscapes and historical architecture.
Highlights in Eguisheim
Château Saint-Léon
We started our exploration here, surrounded by quaint half-timbered houses that looked like they were plucked from a storybook.
Saint-Léon Fountain
This charming fountain, named after Pope Leo IX, is adorned with flowers and adds to the village’s fairytale charm.
Church of Saints Peter and Paul
The church’s gothic belltower, dating back to 1220, is a must-see, along with its beautifully preserved porch featuring intricate sculptures.
Wine Tasting Experience
We couldn’t leave without sampling some local wines. At the Wolfsberger winery, we indulged in a tasting of their crisp Rieslings, bringing home a few bottles to remember the experience.
We knew we liked this winery since we had already tried a bottle of this wonderful Wolfberger wine at a restaurant in Colmar several days prior, which increased our excitement to pick up some to take home.
Pigeonry in Rue Du Rempart
This picturesque spot is rumored to have inspired Belle’s house in “Beauty and the Beast,” attracting visitors from all over who are eager to experience its enchanting ambiance.
Nestled amidst lush greenery and vibrant flowers, the setting brings a fairytale charm that captivates both young and old alike. It’s a popular photo location, so patience is key to capturing the perfect shot; many find themselves waiting for the ideal light or moment to immortalize their visit in stunning photographs.
Whether it’s the intricate architectural details or the serene landscape surrounding it, this magical place creates unforgettable memories for everyone who stops by.
Midday: Hunawihr France
Next, we visited the tranquil village of Hunawihr, nestled among rolling vineyards that stretch as far as the eye can see. Recognized as one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages in France,’ Hunawihr offers a peaceful retreat on the Route du Vin, where visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls through quaint cobblestone streets lined with charming half-timbered houses.
The village is not only known for its stunning aesthetics but also for its rich history, with ancient buildings and local traditions that tell the story of its winemaking heritage. As we wandered, the aroma of ripe grapes mingled with fresh air, creating an enchanting ambiance that invited us to explore its wine cellars and taste exquisite local wines, making our day unforgettable.

Church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur:
This fortified church offers stunning panoramic views of the vineyards that stretch as far as the eye can see, creating a breathtaking tapestry of green and gold, especially during the harvest season.
In addition to the scenic beauty, visitors can enjoy a glimpse into the region’s rich history, reflected in its ancient frescoes that showcase intricate designs and vibrant colors, as well as the impressive Romanesque architecture that stands as a testament to the craftsmanship of the time.
This unique combination of natural beauty and historical significance makes the church a must-visit destination for both history enthusiasts and lovers of picturesque landscapes.
Butterfly Garden
We didn’t have time to visit the Jardin des Papillons, but we’ve heard great things about it, from the vibrant colors of the butterflies that flutter around to the immersive experience of walking through lush greenery.
Many friends have told us about the atmosphere and how it feels as if you’ve stepped into a serene paradise filled with nature’s wonders. Their vivid descriptions have sparked our curiosity, and we hope to plan a visit soon to witness the enchanting beauty and tranquility that the garden offers.
Stork Reintroduction Center:
Hunawihr is known for its dedicated efforts to reintroduce storks to the region, truly reflecting the community’s commitment to preserving local wildlife. During our visit, we learned about these majestic birds at the local center, where passionate volunteers shared their knowledge about stork rehabilitation and the vital role these birds play in the ecosystem.
The center also provided fascinating insights into the storks’ breeding habits and migratory patterns, illustrating the challenges they face in a changing environment. It was inspiring to witness how the town’s initiatives are not only aimed at nurturing these beautiful creatures but also at promoting awareness and education about the importance of biodiversity in our world.
Afternoon: Ribeauvillé France
Our final stop was the lively town of Ribeauvillé, one of the few places along the Route du Vin with a distinctly French name. Nestled between rolling vineyards and dramatic hills, this charming locale brims with history and culture, inviting visitors to explore its cobblestone streets.
The blend of medieval and Renaissance architecture here is truly captivating, with colorful facades that reflect the town’s rich heritage and vibrant atmosphere. As we wandered through Ribeauvillé, the enchanting sights were complemented by the delightful aromas of local cuisine wafting from quaint bistros, making it an unforgettable experience.

Grand’Rue
This bustling main street is lined with colorful buildings, shops, and cafes, each brimming with unique charm and character. We strolled along, enjoying local pastries that melted in our mouths, savoring the delightful flavors and aromas wafting through the air, while admiring the beautiful facades adorned with intricate designs and vibrant hues.
As we wandered, the lively chatter of fellow tourists and locals added to the atmosphere, punctuated by the occasional sound of laughter from a nearby outdoor terrace where friends gathered, sharing stories over cups of steaming coffee. The warm sun cast a golden glow on the scene, enhancing the vividness of the surroundings and inviting us to explore even further.
Château de Saint-Ulrich
A hike up the hillside rewarded us with breathtaking views from the ruins of this historic castle, where the remnants of ancient stone walls stood proudly against the backdrop of a vibrant sky.
As we climbed higher, the air became increasingly fresh and invigorating, filling our lungs with the scent of wildflowers and greenery. The panoramic vista that finally greeted us unveiled rolling hills, dotted with quaint villages and lush forests stretching as far as the eye could see, making the effort of the ascent truly worthwhile.
Metzgerturm (Butcher’s Tower)
This medieval gate tower, built in the late 13th century, still houses the bell that once signaled curfew to the townspeople, resonating through the cobblestone streets and serving as a reminder of the days when nightfall brought with it an air of safety and order.
Standing tall against the passage of time, the tower not only showcases intricate architectural details that reflect the craftsmanship of the era but also symbolizes the historical significance of fortified structures in protecting communities from potential threats.
As the sun sets, the deep, resonant toll of the bell echoes, evoking nostalgic memories among the locals and attracting visitors who marvel at its beauty and the stories it has silently witnessed over the centuries.
Evening: Farewell to the Route du Vin
As the sun set over the vineyards, we reflected on our journey along the Route du Vin. Each village we visited offered a unique glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Alsace. From the medieval charm of Eguisheim to the serene beauty of Hunawihr and the historical allure of Ribeauvillé, our day trip was a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. We left with a deeper appreciation for Alsace’s wines, its storied past, and the warm hospitality of its people, already dreaming of our next visit.
