The North Cascades National Park complex is a true gem for outdoor enthusiasts in the Pacific Northwest. The park’s stunning beauty and rugged landscapes make it almost unfathomable that it’s one of the least visited national parks in the United States. Despite its remote nature, on sunny summer weekends, you’ll see plenty of hikers and adventurers coming from nearby Seattle, just three hours away.

One reason for the park’s lower visitation compared to parks like Yellowstone or Mount Rainier may be its rustic camping facilities. Unlike some more popular national parks, none of the campgrounds in North Cascades offer showers, and other comfort amenities are limited. However, the park’s remoteness and natural beauty provide a peaceful, wild experience that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Our Basecamp: Winthrop, WA

Staying in Winthrop, a charming Old West-themed town, makes for the perfect base to explore North Cascades. With cozy accommodations ranging from rustic lodges to modern inns and campgrounds, Winthrop offers easy access to the park’s attractions and plenty of post-adventure relaxation.

After a day in the park, unwind in Winthrop’s historic downtown, where you can stroll along wooden boardwalks and explore unique shops and galleries. Winthrop’s blend of scenic beauty and small-town charm creates a welcoming vibe for visitors.

Where to Camp: Pine Near RV Park

For campers looking for amenities beyond what the park offers, Pine Near RV Park in Winthrop is ideal. Located about 30 miles east of North Cascades, this campground has options for both RVers and tent campers, plus tipis available for rent if you don’t have camping gear. Here’s what to expect:

  • Facilities: Clean, flushing toilets, showers ($1 for two minutes of hot water) and laundry.
  • Outdoor Kitchen: An impressive kitchen setup with propane grills, griddles, and refrigerators—everything you need to whip up a delicious camp meal.
  • Local Wildlife: Beware of the friendly deer who roam around the campground, often snacking on the flowers!

Things to Do in Winthrop

For a fun historical experience, visit the Schaefer Museum, a free (donations appreciated) open-air museum showcasing the town’s pioneer past and offering a glimpse into the lifestyles and challenges faced by early settlers.

Set on the original homestead of one of Winthrop’s earliest settlers, the museum is packed with fascinating artifacts from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including an impressive 1914 Model T, which serves as a testament to the ingenuity and spirit of the era. As you wander through the carefully curated exhibits, you’ll discover unique tools, vintage clothing, and interactive displays that bring to life the stories of those who shaped the community.

The serene outdoor setting, combined with the rich historical context, makes it an ideal spot for families, history buffs, and anyone interested in the charming heritage of Winthrop. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely stroll or engaging with knowledgeable staff, the Schaefer Museum offers an enriching experience that resonates with visitors of all ages.

Where to Eat in Winthrop

While we didn’t have the chance to explore many restaurants in Winthrop, our visit to East 20 Pizza was quite memorable, with its delicious offerings leaving a lasting impression.

Unfortunately, most of the eateries were bustling during our stay, leading us to dine mostly in nearby Twisp, where we also enjoyed some fantastic meals. If you’re looking for great dining options in the area, plan ahead to secure a table at popular spots!

  • East 20 Pizza: Known for delicious pizza and a solid selection of local beers, this spot is a local favorite.

Culinary Finds in Twisp, WA

Just 8 miles east of Winthrop, Twisp has its own delicious food scene and is a must-visit for food lovers exploring the Methow Valley.

Here are some dining highlights:

  • La Fonda Lopez: A vibrant spot offering mouthwatering Mexican cuisine.
  • El Valee: Another fantastic choice for Latin-inspired dishes.
  • Cinnamon Twisp Bakery and Espresso: A great stop for coffee and pastries—don’t miss their signature cinnamon twisp!
  • 1908 BBQ and Bourbon: A popular choice for BBQ fans with an impressive selection of bourbon.

If you can’t find dining options in Winthrop, head to Twisp, where you’ll have plenty of choices to satisfy your appetite.

Exploring the Park Along Highway 20

The North Cascades Highway (State Route 20) stretches 436 miles across northern Washington, running directly through North Cascades National Park. It’s easily one of the most scenic drives you’ll find anywhere, with breathtaking viewpoints and hiking trails.

Must-Stop Viewpoints

  • Diablo Lake Overlook: Known for its mesmerizing turquoise waters, this iconic overlook offers panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The lake’s color comes from glacial silt, creating a surreal aqua hue you have to see to believe.
  • Washington Pass Overlook: Sitting at over 5,000 feet, this viewpoint gives sweeping views of Liberty Bell Mountain and Early Winters Spires. It’s the perfect place to capture the rugged beauty of the North Cascades.

Top Hikes

  • Blue Lake Trail: This 4.4-mile round-trip hike is perfect for families and those looking for a moderate challenge. The trail winds through lush forests, leading to the serene Blue Lake, a beautiful alpine destination surrounded by rocky peaks.
  • Maple Pass Loop Trail: This 7.2-mile loop is a bit more challenging but offers some of the best views in the park. In summer, wildflowers blanket the meadows, and in fall, the foliage is vibrant. If you’re up for the adventure, the panoramic vistas from the top are well worth the climb.

Final Tips for Visiting North Cascades National Park

  • Time Your Visit: Summer provides full access to the park, but if you’re looking to avoid crowds, consider visiting in the fall when the leaves change.
  • Pack Essentials: Mountain weather can be unpredictable, so bring layers, a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, and sturdy hiking boots.
  • Leave No Trace: To help preserve this beautiful wilderness, pack out all trash, respect wildlife, and stick to marked trails.

Conclusion

North Cascades National Park and the surrounding towns of Winthrop and Twisp offer an ideal mix of adventure and relaxation, from serene campsites to mouthwatering meals and scenic viewpoints. Whether you’re hiking the trails, taking in the breathtaking vistas, or simply enjoying the small-town charm, this area is a dream destination for nature lovers.
