Discover Leipzig: A Hidden Gem for Christmas Markets

Leipzig may not be the first city that comes to mind when planning a European Christmas Market itinerary, but this vibrant Saxon destination has much to offer year-round. During the holiday season, it transforms into a winter wonderland, dazzling visitors with festive lights, historical charm, and culinary delights.

Quick Travel Facts: Leipzig at a Glance

  • Distance from Berlin: Approximately 265 km (118 miles) south or about 1 hour and 15 minutes by high-speed train.
  • Accessibility: Leipzig is well-connected via Germany’s efficient rail network, with direct trains to major cities like Berlin, Frankfurt, Erfurt, and Dresden.

Many Americans’ impressions of Germany are shaped by family or friends who served in “West” Germany during military deployments. As Leipzig was part of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) during the Cold War, it remains less familiar to travelers from the United States. However, for those willing to explore beyond the well-trodden paths of Bavaria or the Rhine Valley, Leipzig offers delightful surprises.

A Haven for Music Lovers

Leipzig is a paradise for classical music fans, with deep ties to renowned composers like Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, Clara and Robert Schumann, and Richard Wagner. The annual Bach Fest, held every summer, is a must-see for music enthusiasts.

Arrival: The Beauty of Leipzig’s Main Station

The enormous and strikingly beautiful Leipzig main station

Visitors arriving by train are greeted by the grand Leipzig Hauptbahnhof, the largest train station in Europe. Its stunning architecture, especially adorned with festive lights and decorations during the holiday season, is a sight to behold. A small Christmas Market inside the station offers shelter from winter weather and a chance to enjoy Glühwein or shop for unique gifts. The station also boasts diverse dining options, including what might be the world’s most beautiful Starbucks.

Leipzig’s Magical Christmas Markets

During Advent, Leipzig features no fewer than eight Christmas Markets, each with its own theme and unique offerings. From the charming Finnish Village to the enchanting Medieval Market, every corner of the city brims with festive cheer.

The Marktplatz Christmas Market

The heart of Leipzig, the downtown market square

The centerpiece of Leipzig’s holiday season, the Marktplatz Christmas Market is set against the backdrop of the historic Old Town Hall, constructed in the 1500s. Visitors can enjoy nightly musical performances, with the Town Hall’s balcony serving as a stage.

Enjoying two of our all-time favorite Christmas treats – waffles with vanilla cream and glühwein

We indulged in warm waffles topped with thick vanilla cream, heavenly Dampfnudel (a bread dumpling crisped on the bottom and served with warm vanilla sauce), and hearty beef goulash paired with dumplings. Multiple cups of Glühwein kept us cozy as we strolled through the bustling market.

The Medieval Market and Finnish Village

At the Medieval Market at Naschmarkt, we savored a Riesenwurst (huge bratwurst) and Knacker (beef sausage with a crunchy casing), both cooked to perfection. We enjoyed more Glühwein (yes, more!) while being entertained by a lively bagpipe band.

The fountain on the Augustus square

Later, we explored the Finnish Village, where we tried flame-cooked lachs (salmon) and a Finnish twist on Glühwein. Relaxing by the fire pit was a perfect way to warm up before continuing our festive journey.

A Day of Culture and History

The next morning, we visited the iconic Thomas Church, where Johann Sebastian Bach served as choir director for 21 years. Hearing the organ play in this historic space, where Bach himself once worked, was a truly moving experience.

From there, we admired the beautiful decorations of the Mädler Passage, stopping to rub the toe of the Faust statue for good luck. Leipzig’s intricate passageways, which cut through shopping centers, are a unique architectural feature.

The square of the Nicholas Church – this is where German reunification began

We continued to the Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas Church), the birthplace of the 1989 protests that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification. Here, I experienced a personal delight: Grünkohl (kale), cooked in a style reminiscent of Southern U.S. greens—a nostalgic and delicious treat.

Evening Delights and Farewell Feasts

Enjoying the stunning sunset from the rooftop of the Felix Hotel

That evening, we watched a stunning sunset from the Felix Hotel’s rooftop bar, which offers sweeping views of Augustusplatz and the Leipzig Opera House. Strolling down the festive Grimmaische Straße, we treated ourselves to potato raclette (potatoes topped with melted raclette cheese, bacon, and fried onions) and Feuerzangenbowle, a Glühwein drink topped with a flaming rum-soaked sugar cube. These dishes were as festive as they were delicious.

On our final morning, before catching the train to Dresden, we couldn’t resist a couple of last treats. First, a Handbrot—wood-oven-baked bread stuffed with ham and cheese. Then, at the Südtiroler Dorf (South Tyrol Village), we enjoyed delicate dumplings with ravioli-like pasta, an elegant and unforgettable meal worthy of a fine dining restaurant.

A City to Cherish

Strolling through the Barfußgaschen – one of Leipzig’s most romantic lanes

As we departed Leipzig, we couldn’t help but marvel at the city’s perfect blend of history, culture, and festive cheer. This isn’t just a destination—it’s an experience that stays with you. Leipzig, we’ll be back!
