The images many Americans have of Germany are often shaped by the experiences of family and friends who served in “West” Germany with the military. However, because Erfurt was located in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) or “East” Germany during the Cold War, it remains less familiar to many travelers from the United States.

For those who venture beyond the well-trodden paths of Bavaria or the Rhine Valley, Erfurt is a delightful discovery. This beautiful city, the capital of Thuringia, charms visitors with its rich history, stunning architecture, and genuine authenticity. Unlike many other cities in Germany, Erfurt was fortunate to escape significant damage during the Second World War. What you see today is the real thing: cobblestone streets, romantic bridges, striking half-timbered houses, and awe-inspiring churches that look as if they’ve been plucked straight from the pages of a fairy tale.

A Hidden Gem Among Christmas Markets

Erfurt provides a more authentic experience than some of Europe’s bigger and better-known Christmas destinations. During a recent visit to Vienna, for instance, we heard a mix of languages from tourists at every market. In contrast, Erfurt’s markets had a distinct local feel, where we heard mostly German and were even treated to recommendations from friendly locals. Sharing a Ferris wheel ride with two proud Erfurters, we were able to practice our rusty German and learn about the “must-visit” sights in their charming city.

Travelers visiting during the Christmas season will find Erfurt especially magical. The festive markets bring twinkling lights, the aroma of Glühwein, and the joyful hum of holiday cheer. Whether strolling through the historic Cathedral Square, crossing the iconic Krämerbrücke (Merchant’s Bridge), or exploring cozy, hidden markets, Erfurt offers an unforgettable experience for every visitor.

Must-See Highlights During the Holidays:

Cathedral Square (Domplatz):

• The centerpiece of Erfurt’s Christmas festivities. The Erfurter Dom (Cathedral of St. Mary) and St. Severi’s Church create a dramatic backdrop for the market. The glowing Christmas tree and festive lights amplify the Gothic splendor of these landmarks.

• The cathedral with its high Gothic choir, Romanesque tower area and late Gothic west hall is the successor to the sacred building commissioned by Rome in 724. It was the main church of the diocese of Erfurt, founded by Bishop Boniface in 742. Inside, the Gothic choir windows, the extensive choir stalls (14th century) and the Romanesque sculptures of an enthroned Madonna and a monumental candle bearer are particularly worth seeing. In the central tower is the world’s largest medieval free-swinging bell, the “Gloriosa”.

Krämerbrücke (Merchant’s Bridge):

• The Krämerbrücke is a living piece of medieval history. Spanning the Gera River, it’s Europe’s longest inhabited bridge, lined with 32 half-timbered buildings hosting artisan shops and cafes. At Christmas, it transforms into a fairy-tale promenade with festive lights and decorations.

Brücken Christmas Market:

• A cozy, less touristy market located near the Krämerbrücke, perfect for soaking in a more local vibe while enjoying handcrafted gifts and seasonal treats.

Hidden Courtyard Markets:

• Venture off the beaten path to discover intimate markets tucked away in picturesque courtyards or along the Gera River. These spots offer unique gifts, fewer crowds, and a more tranquil holiday experience.

Festive Treats to Try:

Each of these festive foods added to the charm of our experience, warming our hands and hearts as we wandered through the beautifully decorated markets. These culinary delights, paired with the historic ambiance of Erfurt, made for an unforgettable holiday adventure. If you’re planning a trip, be sure to arrive with an appetite!

• Glühwein: Warm, spiced mulled wine served in collectible mugs.

• Thüringer Rostbratwurst: A regional specialty, this sausage is a must-try, grilled to perfection and served in a fresh roll.

• Kartoffelpuffer: Crispy potato pancakes, served hot with apple sauce or herbed quark.

• Sautéed Mushrooms: Cooked in savory garlic and herb sauce, these earthy bites are a surprise favorite.

• Handbrot: Freshly baked dough stuffed with cheese and ham, topped with sour cream. They’ll even cut it in half for you if they know you’re sharing with your travel partner.
